TREY HOLLINGER FOR NEW YORK SUNSHINE (SUNSHINE DESIGNS)

I REACHED OUT TO JOHN MARGARITIS OF @NEWYORKSUNSHINE, AND WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO DO A DESIGN FOR THEIR NIKE SPORTSWEAR COLLABORATION.

THE DESIGN WAS TO COMPLIMENT THE RELEASE OF THEIR “INSTALL TEAM AIR FORCE 2.0” THAT FEATURES AN EXTENDED EYELET WITH INDUSTRIAL BOLT LACES.

THE SHIRT AND HOODIE RELEASED ALONGSIDE THE SHOES AT THE GRAND OPENING OF LEBRON JAMES’
FLAGSHIP STORE UNKNWN’S NEWEST LOCATION IN MIAMI DURING THIS YEARS ART BASEL, AS WELL AS ONLINE.

HERE’S A HYPEBEAST ARTICLE.

I WAS BRIEFED ON WHAT I WOULD BE DESIGNING FOR: THE “INSTALL TEAM AF 2.0” WITH THEIR FOCAL POINT BEING THEIR HEX BOLT LACE EXTENSIONS.
I WAS GIVEN AN IMAGE OF AN X-RAY OF AN INDUSTRIAL NAIL IN SOMEONE’S
HEAD, AND WAS TOLD TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING THAT INCORPORATED THE HEX BOLTS USED IN THE ALTERED AIR FORCE’S LACING SYSTEM.

I WENT IN THE ARCHIVES OF THE FLEET LIBRARY TO FIND SKELETAL X-RAYS, AND FROM THERE, USED AN APPLE AND HEX BOLTS
TO GET THE PERSPECTIVE I DESIRED THAT WOULD CORRESPOND TO THE PRINTED DESIGN.
I ENDED UP MAKING 90 OR SO VERSIONS OF DIFFERENT SKULLS, UNTIL JOHN AND I DECIDED WHICH
ONE WOULD GO INTO PRODUCTION TO BE RELEASED AT THE OPENING OF UNKNWN MIAMI / WYNWOOD
